Kaizer Chiefs’ perfect start to the Betway Premiership season has been built on organisation, attention to detail, and tactical awareness. These principles will be put to the ultimate test in their highly anticipated clash against Mamelodi Sundowns this today (kick-off 3pm).
Chiefs will host the encounter at FNB Stadium, currently sitting at the top of the standings. They have earned that position with back-to-back victories, beating Kruger United and Sekhukhune United, while scoring five goals and conceding only one.
Despite these impressive statistics, the team is far from a "well-oiled machine." Rather, they have mastered the basics, doing just enough to score effectively while maintaining discipline at the back.
Defender Inacio Miguel has found himself at the centre of a love-hate relationship with the club’s supporters. He has been jeered when his passing or execution deviates from expectations, yet just as quickly applauded for his timely tackles and leadership at the back.
Experienced enough to withstand the scrutiny, the Angolan international admits he understands the nature of this double-edged relationship with the fans, especially given the demands placed on the players before and during matches.
“I can understand the frustration of the supporters; sometimes they want things to happen quickly,” Miguel said yesterday. “But first of all, I have orders to follow from the coach, and we have a specific game plan to execute.
“Sometimes, we must not rush. We must be organised and aware of where our teammates are. Are they ready to receive the ball?
"Obviously, tactics are part of the game. I understand the fans want us to score quickly, but that isn't always the reality of every match.”
Miguel added that the Chiefs faithful should anticipate the team sticking to their game plan, which will be essential in neutralising the threat Sundowns poses this weekend.
“For instance, in the game against Sundowns, if we rush, they can gain momentum and fight back,” Miguel explained.
“Sometimes, it is important to slow the tempo. It’s part of the tactic, even if I understand the supporters' desire for us to play aggressively for the win.”
Though Chiefs are the hosts, Sundowns will arrive at Nasrec as the favourites, having dominated recent encounters against Amakhosi, particularly in away fixtures. Despite their favourite tag, Sundowns have looked vulnerable defensively, conceding two goals in each of their first two matches of the season, forcing them to rely on late drama to secure back-to-back 3-2 victories.
Miguel insists that facing the champions early in the season is a privilege, not a burden. He emphasised that the team will focus on fine-tuning their own preparations before analysing their opponent’s threats.
“First of all, we have to respect Sundowns. The whole of South Africa must respect them – they are Champions League winners,” Miguel said. “We will face them with a lot of respect, but we cannot forget who we are.
“We need to understand that we have the capacity to overcome Sundowns. We must focus on ourselves, not them. Our energy will be spent on recovery and analysing how they intend to approach us.
“Their planning against us won’t be the same as it was for Polokwane. It will be difficult to stop us, but we also need to be just as clinical in how we stop them.”
