Marcelo Allende has confirmed he remains at Mamelodi Sundowns despite speculation over his future, but suggested the upcoming campaign could be his last at Chloorkop.
The Chilean playmaker addressed the speculation on Monday afternoon while speaking to the media ahead of Sundowns’ Betway Premiership clash against Marumo Gallants on Wednesday (kick-off 7.30pm).
Allende, who joined the Brazilians in 2022, insisted his focus remains on Sundowns and revealed he has not held talks with potential suitors. However, his reference to this being his “last year” at the club has raised further questions over his long-term future.
“I’m focused on my last year here at the club. I haven’t spoken to anyone. As I have said, I’m really focused, from everywhere (all angles),” Allende said.
“I need to play; I will always give my 100%. If not, I also support my teammates because I think it is the most important thing at Sundowns so that we bring good things to the club.”
The 26-year-old has become an important figure for Sundowns since arriving from Chile, making 74 appearances and scoring seven goals for the club.
His versatility and technical ability have made him a valuable member of Miguel Cardoso’s squad, although he faces increased competition for places in a team boasting considerable depth. Allende’s time at Sundowns has already been decorated with major success.
Last season, he played a role in the Brazilians’ run to their second CAF Champions League title, adding another major honour to a memorable spell in South Africa.
The midfielder has also represented Chile at under-17 and under-20 level and has one senior international cap to his name.
For now, Allende appears determined to put the speculation aside and concentrate on his responsibilities at Sundowns. But with his own admission that this could be his final season at the club, every appearance could carry added significance.
Should this indeed prove to be his swansong at Chloorkop, Allende will be hoping to leave on another high after helping Sundowns conquer Africa last season.
The Brazilians will be desperate to record a win against Gallants to keep pace with table-topping Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu, who are all on seven points. Sundowns are currently seventh in the standings on four points after playing two games, winning one and drawing one.
