Samantha Keller’s debut novel, “The Light Remains”, opens with a death that changes everything.
Set in Malalane, Mpumalanga, during the 1960s, the novel follows Eve Hunter as she navigates grief, family expectations and a love that threatens to disrupt the future everyone has planned for her.
Eve grows up on her family’s dairy farm in the Lowveld, deeply connected to the land and shaped by the traditions of her family.
Her world changes when her father is electrocuted while building a barn. His sudden death is devastating, but it also brings a long-buried family secret to the surface.
Keller uses the tragedy to explore how families protect their secrets and how those secrets can shape the lives of those who inherit them.
In the aftermath of her father’s death, Eve turns to Jack, her neighbour and closest friend. Their relationship offers her comfort as she tries to make sense of her loss. But their growing connection comes with complications. Jack has long been expected to marry Eve’s older sister, Kate, with both families assuming that their future together is already decided.
As Eve and Jack grow closer, Eve finds herself caught between what she wants and what her family expects from her.
The conflict becomes more complicated when Kate makes a devastating request. Eve is forced to confront the limits of loyalty and ask whether protecting her family should come at the expense of her own happiness.
Set against the changing landscape of 1960s South Africa, “The Light Remains” also captures a period when family, faith and social expectations carried considerable weight. Eve’s struggle for independence becomes as important as her relationship with Jack.
At its heart, the novel is a coming-of-age story about a young woman learning to make choices for herself while carrying the weight of those who came before her.
