An anniversary celebration aimed at drawing Capetonians back into the Inner City has been forced to take a rain check.
The Mission for Inner City Cape Town has postponed its first anniversary celebrations, which were scheduled for Thursday, 3 September 2026, because of the forecast for severe weather.
The event was due to include a stakeholder anniversary gathering from 4pm to 6pm, followed by a free public concert featuring Zolani Mahola from 6pm to 8pm.
According to The Mission, forecasts of heavy rain and strong winds expected in Cape Town on Thursday afternoon and evening prompted the decision to postpone the outdoor event.
The decision comes as a cut-off low is expected to bring cold, wet and windy conditions to parts of the Western Cape from Thursday. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of disruptive weather in parts of the province, including strong or damaging winds in some areas.
Co-founder of The Mission for Inner City Cape Town, Brad Armitage, said the organisation’s priority was to create an Inner City that is safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
“Our first priority has always been creating an Inner City that is safe, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone,” Armitage said.
“While we were looking forward to celebrating our first anniversary alongside our partners, stakeholders and the public, it would be irresponsible to encourage people to spend time outdoors in what is expected to be severe weather conditions.”
The Mission’s anniversary comes after a year of efforts aimed at encouraging greater activity and engagement in Cape Town’s Inner City, including initiatives involving businesses, residents, stakeholders and the public.
The postponement also affects the free concert with Mahola, which was intended to form part of the anniversary programme.
The Mission said a new date for both the anniversary celebration and concert would be communicated once confirmed.
It has apologised for the inconvenience and thanked its partners, performers, suppliers and members of the public for their understanding.
The broader weather system is expected to develop across the Western Cape from Thursday, with conditions varying between areas of the province.
