Spring has arrived, and with warmer evenings comes the return of a familiar television competition. "Tropika Island of Treasure" is back for its 12th season, this time taking celebrities and members of the public to Réunion Island for a new round of challenges.
The reality competition pairs celebrities with members of the public, who compete as teams in physical and mental challenges.
Strength and endurance are tested alongside strategy, teamwork and determination, meaning having a strong partner can be just as important as being physically fit.
Last season took the competition to Zanzibar, where actor Hungani Ndlovu and Dimakatso Calisa were crowned winners.
The pair shared the R1-million prize, with each also receiving a Suzuki Jimny. Their win came after making it through the competition and offered a reminder of what contestants are working towards when they arrive on the island.
For Season 12, the programme moves to Réunion Island, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean known for its volcanic landscapes and mountainous terrain.
The celebrity line-up includes rapper Nadia Nakai, Olympic athlete Caster Semenya, former rugby player Francois Hougaard, actress Leandie du Randt, actors Sandile Mahlangu and Wiseman Mncube, media personality Amanda du-Pont and former Miss South Africa Lalela Mswane.
Each celebrity will be paired with a member of the public, with the eight consumer contestants still to be revealed.
Together, the teams will take on challenges designed to test their physical ability, decision-making and how well they can work together under pressure.
The new location is another change for a programme that has taken its contestants to destinations around the world. Réunion's volcanic terrain and coastline will provide the backdrop as the teams compete for the treasure.
Returning to the presenter role is Zanele Potelwa, who hosted the previous season in Zanzibar.
For viewers who have followed the programme through its previous seasons, the appeal lies in seeing how different personalities respond when they are removed from their everyday lives and placed in competition with one another.
A celebrity name may attract attention, but once the challenges begin, the partnership has to do the work. Season 12 will reveal which celebrity-public pair can turn that partnership into a winning combination.
"Tropika Island of Treasure" Season 12 premieres on Wednesday, September 23 at 9pm on SABC 1, with a repeat on S3 on Thursday, September 24 at 6pm.
