Taylor Swift is not quite ready to leave “The Life of a Showgirl” behind. Almost a year after releasing her 12th studio album, Swift has added four new songs to the project, releasing “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore” today.
The expanded version adds “Patient Zero”, “Cleveland!”, “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon” to the original tracklist. The four songs were written with Max Martin and Shellback during a trip Swift took to Sweden to celebrate the success of the album.
Swift revealed “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore” earlier this week after initially announcing “Patient Zero” as a new single. The announcement came after a series of clues on her social media, including the replacement of the letter “O” with zeros in her Instagram bio and some Apple Music lyrics.
What initially appeared to be the arrival of a standalone song turned out to be the beginning of another chapter for “The Life of a Showgirl” album.
Swift said the additional songs came from a trip to Sweden with Martin and Shellback, who worked with her on the original album.
The trip was meant to be a chance for the collaborators to celebrate and reflect on the album’s success, but a nearby studio gave them an opportunity to start writing again.
“About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing. Something that completely blew my mind... You gave ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album.
“Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs. I hope you love them, because they were born out of pure gratitude for your exuberance for and celebration of the album we made,” Swift wrote.
According to “Billboard”, the original album had a record-breaking opening, debuting with 4.002 million equivalent album units in the United States in its first week. It also spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The four new tracks also take Swift into different corners of her personal and romantic writing.
“Patient Zero” has been interpreted as a song about the aftermath of a toxic relationship. ELLE noted similarities between its imagery and earlier Swift songs that fans have linked to Joe Alwyn, although Swift has not identified the person referenced in the track.
“Cleveland!” has been widely interpreted as a love song about Travis Kelce, with the title referencing the city where the NFL star grew up. USA Today described it as a declaration of love that also takes aim at critics.
“Pink Clouding” has prompted speculation about a past relationship, with listeners interpreting its lyrics as Swift reflecting on the way she treated someone she once dated. The song itself does not identify the person involved.
“Babylon” has also fuelled fan theories, particularly because the title recalls Babylon imagery Swift has used before. Listeners have drawn connections to “cowboy like me” and Gracie Abrams’ “us.”, although there is no confirmation from Swift that those references are intentional.
“Patient Zero” has also become the centrepiece of another major Swift announcement this week. Its music video, directed by Swift herself, will premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Sunday, September 27.
The video stars actors Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with cinematography by Oscar-winning filmmaker Emmanuel Lubezki.
Swift teased the video on social media this week, giving fans a short preview ahead of its full debut at the awards ceremony. The premiere also ties into another significant moment for Swift at this year’s VMAs.
She will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a new award recognising artists whose work behind the camera has contributed to music-video storytelling and established a distinctive directorial voice.
Swift has directed a number of her own music videos, including “The Man”, “cardigan”, “willow”, “Anti-Hero”, “Bejeweled” and “Fortnight”, as well as the short film for “All Too Well”.
The new honour therefore arrives on the same night that Swift will debut another music video she directed herself, making the “Patient Zero” premiere part of a larger focus on her work behind the camera.
