It was recently revealed that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is honouring fashion designer John Galliano for next year’s exhibition.
The theme, which is titled “John Galliano: Horizons”, is all about celebrating four decades of Galliano’s work, including his tenure at several fashion houses such as Maison Margiela, Christian Dior, Givenchy and his namesake label.
The announcement was met with a fair share of excitement as fashion lovers anticipate who will wear what and how.
Considering the theme, we anticipate stars highlighting Galliano's mastery and artistic vision on the red carpet through daring and captivating ensembles.
These choices will likely pay homage to his four-decade runway legacy, characterised by flawless tailoring, dramatic silhouettes, deep historical influences and unforgettable fashion statements.
Are we going to see looks that do not look “safe” and expected? Well, we shall see on the first Monday of May 2027.
From his archival pieces to some of his recent work, here are some looks that we are anticipating to see at the 2027 Met Gala
Archival ensembles
John Galliano Fall 1997 golden dress
Upon seeing this gown, my mind immediately thought of Kim Kardashian or Teyana Taylor.
However, I would say Taylor is the perfect fit for this gown because we have seen how she nails the Egyptian aesthetic all the time.
Although she hardly wears archival ensembles because her style leans more towards fresh-off-the-runway looks and custom pieces, she will certainly nail this look since it is more of her style, which is fun, bold and elegant.
Dior Spring 2007 ball gown
Crafted in a serene ivory-white shade, this archival princess-style ball gown features a structured bodice with sharp, folded fabric accents across the shoulders, giving it a sculptural look.
The sculpted skirt includes layers of fabric folded and twisted into an exaggerated, petal-like shape.
Rihanna, Zendaya or even Cardi B would undoubtedly look breathtaking in this gown. Given their history of embracing Galliano’s theatrical designs, both stars are known for being daring and experimental, never hesitating to wear extravagant ensembles.
Christian Dior 1997 lace gown
Defined by its form-fitting silhouette, this dress combines sheer black fabric with intricate, elaborate ornamentation.
It features a high neck, from which cascading black embellishments drape over the chest like fine chains.
I mean, who would look amazing in this gown other than the queen of fitted bodice gowns, the one and only Kim Kardashian? The reality TV star has also previously worn a gown with a design that was nearly similar to this at the 2023 Met Gala.
Modern designs
Maison Margiela Artisanal 2024 shadow green dress
This look features a shadow-green silk tulle dress completed with petal-like tulle on the lower part of the gown.
Underneath, the fashion house explained that it is worn with a sheer, skin-toned bodysuit and a satin corset-style cincher, creating a sculpted silhouette.
The KarJenner clan, mainly Kylie or Kendall Jenner will look stunning in this ensemble since it is more of their style.
This collection also featured porcelain-skin make-up which became quite a viral trend among professional make-up artists. It would be a cherry on top if the A-list celebs also honour Galliano by re-creating the make-up as well.
Looks for the men
John Galliano Menswear SS 2004 Collection
The men are not being left out, okay ... We have seen quite a lot of men nail the Met Gala every single year.
Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo are some of the men I know will nail next year's theme without a doubt.
From the archives, we would love to see the stars wearing something from the 2004 collection, which includes low-cut jerseys and accented bomber jackets, some emblazoned with the gothic scrawl of Galliano's signature lettering.
Although there are so many looks we can dive into, we will certainly leave it to the celebs to surprise us.
