This is also why professional make-up artists tend to carry an impressive collection of brushes in their kits.
While it may look like it’s too much, every brush has a specific purpose, whether it is applying foundation, blending eyeshadow, sculpting the face or adding the perfect amount of blush.
The main types of make-up brushes include face brushes: foundation, blush, powder, contour and fan brushes. Then we have the eye brushes: eye shadow, brow brushes, crease and eyeliner.

Face brushes
- Foundation brush: A foundation brush is designed to help distribute and blend your base evenly across the skin. Apply your foundation using gentle, even strokes, making sure to blend thoroughly so that there are no visible lines or patches. Starting from the centre of the face and gradually working your way towards the edges can help create a more natural finish.
- Blush brush: If you want to avoid looking like you have two perfectly circular circles painted onto your cheeks, blending is key. Use your blush brush to gently diffuse the colour outwards from the apples of your cheeks. Begin with a light hand and gradually build the intensity.
- Powder brush: It is ideal for applying both loose and pressed powder. Pick up a small amount of product with the brush and use gentle circular or sweeping motions to distribute it evenly across the face. This helps set your make-up while avoiding a heavy, cakey appearance.
- Contour brush: It helps define and sculpt the face by adding depth to areas where you naturally want to create shadows. Choose a shade that is dark enough to create definition without looking too harsh against your complexion.
- Fan brush: This brush has a wide, fan-like shape, and it can be used to lightly apply bronzer or highlighter, particularly along the cheekbones. Use soft, sweeping motions to gradually build the product rather than applying too much at once.
Eye brushes
- Brow brush: It is used for shaping, grooming and defining your eyebrows. The angled side can be used to apply brow products such as powder or gel. Use short, controlled strokes to create a defined but blended tail.
- Eyeshadow brush: It is designed to help apply and blend eyeshadow through the crease of the eye. Its shape allows you to concentrate colour in specific areas while also helping to soften harsh edges. Simply pick up a small amount of product, tap away any excess and gently sweep it across the desired area.
- Eyeliner brush: It is perfect for creating a defined lash line, adding a subtle line or creating a dramatic cat-eye. Dip the brush into your eyeliner and begin at the inner corner of the eye, gradually working towards the outer corner. For a winged look, extend the line slightly upwards and outwards at the outer corner.
- Mascara wand: It is used to coat and define the upper and lower lashes. For extra lift and drama, curl your lashes with an eyelash curler. Once your lashes are curled, gently sweep the mascara wand from the roots towards the tips.
