Princess Diana's most famous fashion statement is returning to the spotlight.
Nearly 30 years after it last hit the block, the legendary off-the-shoulder “revenge dress” is heading to Sotheby’s in New York this December, giving collectors a rare chance to own a defining piece of modern royal history.
The work of British-Greek designer Christina Stambolian, it will be auctioned on December 9. It is expected to sell for anything between $150,000 (approximately R2 million) and $300,000 (approximately R4 million).
The gown will be offered as part of a historic standalone fashion evening auction, allowing collectors to own one of the most recognisable pieces in modern royal fashion history.
The auction
Before making its way to New York, the dress will be displayed publicly at Sotheby’s in London from September 14 to 24.
It will then travel to Hong Kong and Geneva as part of an international exhibition tour ahead of the auction.
The sale marks the first time the dress has been offered at auction in nearly three decades, making it a significant moment for royal memorabilia and fashion collectors alike.
The history behind the dress
The people's Princess first wore the gown on June 29, 1994, to a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at London’s Serpentine Gallery.
Although she had owned the dress for three years, she initially considered it too daring for a public appearance. According to “Vogue”, Diana had originally planned to wear a different outfit to the event.
However, her stylist, Anna Harvey, reportedly encouraged her to embrace the moment, and Diana later decided she wanted to “look like a million dollars”.
The resulting appearance became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of her life.
The dress featured a dramatic off-the-shoulder neckline, a fitted silhouette and a short hemline, making it a striking departure from the more conservative royal dressing expected of her at the time.
How it became iconic
The gown is widely known as the “revenge dress” because Diana wore it on the same evening that a televised interview featuring then-Prince Charles included his admission of infidelity.
While the nickname has become closely associated with the dress, its significance extends beyond the headlines surrounding that night.
Diana’s decision to wear the revealing black gown was seen as a powerful expression of confidence and independence.
Rather than allowing the evening’s attention to be defined by her husband’s revelations, she arrived looking self-assured, glamorous and entirely in control of her image.
The appearance also marked a turning point in Diana’s fashion evolution since she had increasingly moved away from the formal, traditional style associated with her early years as a royal and towards a more confident, modern wardrobe.
Diana once sold the dress in 1997 as part of a charity auction of 79 dresses that raised money for cancer and AIDS organisations.
At the time, the dress sold for $64,000 (approximately R1 million).
The styling details
The Princess of Wales paired the gown with black heels, sheer black tights, a black clutch and red nails, creating a look that was both elegant and daring.
She accessorised the gown with pearl earrings and an eye-catching, multi-strand pearl choker featuring a massive central diamond-and-sapphire brooch.
Originally presented to Diana by Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding gift in 1981, the brooch was transformed by Diana into a stunning focal piece that perfectly complemented her striking ensemble.
The combination of pearls, diamonds and the dramatic black dress added another layer of meaning to the outfit, blending royal jewellery with a distinctly modern and rebellious sense of style.
