High fashion often gets accused of taking itself too seriously, but Thom Browne’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection relied on pure, unadulterated playfulness at New York Fashion Week.
Drawing inspiration from the 1998 Disney classic "A Bug’s Life", the American fashion designer who founded his namesake luxury brand in 2001 didn’t just incorporate nature-inspired motifs; he committed to the concept down to the finest, most whimsical details.
Nowhere was this dedication clearer than on the runway’s footwear, where butterflies, ladybirds, and dragonflies were transformed into bold, statement-making art.
Instead of simply creating a collection inspired by the natural world, Browne turned butterflies, bees, dragonflies, beetles and ladybirds into fashion, with the insects appearing across the shoes in surprisingly elaborate ways.
And if you’re someone who loves a statement shoe, there was plenty to look at.
The shoes stole the show
One of the standout details was the way Browne played with the cap-toe pump. At first glance, the shoes looked like classic pumps, but a closer look revealed tiny bug-like faces complete with eyes and antennae.
Some of these details extended beyond the shoe, giving them a fun three-dimensional effect.
The designer took the idea even further with platform pumps featuring oversized butterfly wings. The dramatic wings came in different colour combinations, giving the shoes an almost fantasy-like quality.
One particularly eye-catching pair was covered in crystals, making the already extravagant design even more difficult to miss.
Classic shapes, unexpected details
Despite all the playful additions, the shoes still had a recognisable shape. Many of the pumps featured a slightly squared toe, a tall, slim block heel and a buckled ankle strap.
While others came in a T-strap style, with three-dimensional winged insects placed across the front of the shoe.
There were also several cap-toe styles that leaned heavily into the bug theme. Some featured little eyes and antennae sitting on the toes, while others had details that physically came out from the shoe, making the insects feel almost animated.
Every pair had its own personality
The collection also played with different textures and colour combinations with one grey and blue pair featuring a fuzzy white section at the back, adding another unexpected element to the design.
While another pair, covered in red, black and white spots, immediately brought a ladybird to mind.
It’s these little details that made the footwear feel like more than just an accessory to the collection.
The shoes were given their own personalities, while still fitting into the larger world Browne had created on the runway.
Finding the fun in fashion
That is exactly what the designer wanted because Browne previously described “A Bug’s Life" as “a charming kind of nonsensical story that was fun to play with”, which gives us a pretty good idea of where the playful energy behind the collection came from.
Rather than taking the inspiration too seriously, he embraced the fun of it and turned something as simple as insects into elaborate fashion pieces.
From tiny bug eyes and antennae to oversized butterfly wings and crystal-covered platforms, Thom Browne’s SS27 collection shows just how far a designer can take an idea when they commit to every detail.
Even though his latest collection caught everyone's attention on the internet, Browne has made a name for himself in the fashion industry for his theatrical shows on the runway, which consist of dramatic and worldly themes like the bug collection.
