If you've ever queued for a flat white at a Vida e Caffè kiosk on your way into the office or on a garage forecourt, you've been buying into a brand that's about to change hands entirely.
Shoprite Holdings, South Africa's biggest grocery retailer, has agreed to acquire 100% of Vida e Caffè, the 25-year-old coffee chain that has become one of South Africa's most familiar caffeine fixes.
The deal was announced today (Tuesday, September 1) alongside Shoprite's annual results for the year to 28 June, with the share purchase agreement having been signed on 20 August. It still needs regulatory approval, with completion expected during Shoprite's 2027 financial year.
For a brand that started as a single neighbourhood coffee shop, it's a striking full-circle moment.
Vida - Portuguese for "life" - has grown into a genuinely international presence, with roughly 400 corporate and franchise stores across South Africa and outposts across Africa.
Its footprint spans high street kiosks, garage forecourts, drive-thrus, corporate offices and retail partnerships.
For Shoprite the acquisition of Vida e Caffè (Vida), strengthens "our presence in the coffee and quick service restaurant (QSR) category while adding deep operational expertise in this fast-growing market".
With 25 years of experience, Vida has established itself as South Africa’s leading coffee brand, operating approximately 400 corporate and franchise stores nationwide.
"Its broad and demographically diverse customer base is supported by a range of store formats, including high street, forecourt, drive-thru, corporate office and retail locations, as well as an increasingly integrated digital offering," said Shoprite.
"This combination provides a strong platform for future growth and customer engagement.
"Authentic, innovative and highly relevant to evolving consumer lifestyles, Vida is a business we greatly admire, and we look forward to learning from its success while supporting its next phase of growth."
The growing coffee culture is big business in South Africa.
Shoprite said that in terms of timing, having signed the share purchase agreement during August 2026, "the transaction is subject to the fulfilment of conditions precedent including regulatory approval. As such we expect the effective date during our 2027 financial year".
For regulars, the real question is whether their order will taste, and cost, the same. Shoprite has not said whether the deal will change Vida's franchise model, staffing or in-store experience.
It is, however, the latest sign of Shoprite pushing beyond groceries. Its Sixty60 delivery platform grew sales 34.5% to R25.5 billion this year; Petshop Science grew 74.5% after opening 41 new stores. The group also finalised the acquisition of an initial majority stake in R&A Cellular, a payments firm that gives informal traders access to financial services.
So the short version for your daily order: nothing changes at the counter just yet. But the company stamping your loyalty card is about to look very different.
