Kaizer Chiefs (0) 1 Phili 64’
Mamelodi Sundowns (0) 1 Mailula 76’
KAIZER Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns shared the spoils at FNB Stadium on Saturday after Langelihle Phili and Cassius Mailula traded second-half strikes in a tightly contested Betway Premiership encounter.
The opening 45 minutes offered little entertainment, with both sides struggling to create meaningful opportunities.
There was just one shot between the two teams before the break, as Chiefs adopted a cautious approach against the much-fancied visitors.
Fernando Da Cruz handed Thabo Moloisane a surprise debut as Chiefs lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, seemingly prepared to surrender possession and rely on their defensive structure.
In the absence of Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas was also handed his first start in almost 12 months as Sundowns attempted to find a way through the Amakhosi rearguard.
The match appeared destined to peter out into a goalless draw until Phili suddenly brought it to life in the 64th minute.
The 20-year-old, who was named Man of the Match in Chiefs’ previous league outing, continued his impressive start to life at Naturena by breaking the deadlock.
Siphesihle Ndlovu produced the key piece of work, bursting into the Sundowns penalty area before picking out Phili.
The new signing made no mistake from close range, finishing the move to give Chiefs the lead.
The goal forced Sundowns to increase their attacking urgency, with Miguel Cardoso turning to his bench in search of inspiration.
He found it in Mailula.
The returning forward needed virtually no time to make an impact, scoring with his first touch after coming on in the 76th minute.
Mailula got the final touch on a looping ball into the Chiefs box, with goalkeeper Brandon Petersen misjudging its flight and failing to deal with the situation.
The equaliser ensured neither side could claim bragging rights at FNB Stadium, although both coaches will take positives from a competitive contest.
For Chiefs, Phili’s continued impact will be particularly encouraging, while Sundowns will be pleased with Mailula’s immediate contribution after returning to the club.
Ultimately, however, neither side could find the decisive second goal as the points were shared.
The result leaves Chiefs with seven points from three Premiership matches, while Sundowns have four points from two games.
