Miguel Cardoso says his success and longevity at Mamelodi Sundowns stem from mutual alignment with his bosses, while emphasising that the club will continue to strengthen the squad where necessary.
Cardoso is in his third season — and second full campaign — at Chloorkop since arriving from Espérance two seasons ago. He has done impressively well since his arrival, winning the Betway Premiership and, most importantly, the CAF Champions League.
Given an underwhelming track record prior to his arrival, Cardoso was not widely tipped to meet his mandate, with many assuming his appointment would end in an early sacking. However, the Portuguese coach has proven his doubters wrong and looks every bit the part.
Sundowns are already on course to reclaim the Betway Premiership title after surrendering it to Orlando Pirates last season, while they can end their domestic knockout trophy drought if they beat Pirates in the MTN8 final on 10 October at a venue still to be confirmed by the PSL.
“When you align the plans of the coach with the resources of the club, then things become easier,” Cardoso said.
“The mentality of the people who manage the club is also important. They know that just because you lose one game, it doesn't mean you can't win consistently.”
Sundowns continue to back Cardoso in the transfer market. The club is reportedly close to signing Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi to cover for Khuliso Mudau, who has been ruled out for most of the season due to injury. Asked about the potential transfer, Cardoso remained coy.
“You know more than I do,” Cardoso said. “You are going to accuse me of not having information. You are telling me about the next player who'll be announced, but I can't answer that. You sound more sure of that than I am. I am not sure who's speaking to you — you must tell me!
“Really, I don't have that situation. So, I don't know. I can only speak about the things that I can control. When a player is officially announced, we can discuss everything. But before that, I don't know. I also don't want to go over the process of the club. If it happens, let's see.”
The club has already confirmed the signing of right-back Deano van Rooyen from Orlando Pirates to bolster their defence following Mudau's setback. Cardoso highlighted the former Buccaneers skipper's versatility and quick adaptation to the group.
“He'll certainly, in due time, become what we want from the position,” Cardoso said.
“He's versatile and clever, with a lot of experience. He'll understand very quickly whatever we ask of him. He was in camp with the team and was out training in the morning so that he gets integrated into the group as quickly as possible.” | IOL Sport
