The Springboks, Orlando Pirates and South Africa's leading football clubs provided plenty for local sports fans to celebrate over the weekend, while the US Open produced two new champions and Manchester City's derby victory was overshadowed by a controversial VAR decision.
Rugby
The Springboks completed a historic 3-1 series victory over New Zealand with a 43-28 win over the All Blacks in Baltimore on Saturday.
South Africa pulled away in the second half to secure victory in the fourth and final match of Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series. The Boks scored six tries as they finished the tour with another emphatic victory over their oldest rivals.
The result gives South Africa the inaugural Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series trophy and further underlines the Boks' dominance ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
At domestic level, Griquas retained the Currie Cup, beating the Pumas 23-16 in Kimberley to claim successive titles.
South African football
Orlando Pirates bounced back from their goalless first-leg draw in Mauritius by beating La Cure Waves 3-1 in the CAF Champions League at home. The victory saw Pirates progress to the next stage of the competition.
In the Betway Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 1-1 draw by Chippa United. Chippa took the lead through Sinoxolo Kammies in the 79th minute, but Sundowns rescued a point through Andre de Jong Van Wyk's stoppage-time equaliser. Sundowns remain unbeaten and top the table.
Kaizer Chiefs were also held to a 1-1 draw by Polokwane City, leaving them unbeaten after six league matches but with three draws.
AmaZulu, meanwhile, claimed a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants, making it two wins in a row and keeping them among the early pace-setters in the Premiership.
Tennis
Elena Rybakina defeated defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to win the women's US Open title and become the new world No 1.
Rybakina's victory ended Sabalenka's bid for a third consecutive US Open crown and gave the Kazakh her third Grand Slam singles title.
In the men's final, Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 to win his first US Open title and his second Grand Slam of the year.
Premier League
Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in a dramatic Manchester derby after playing with 10 men for more than an hour.
Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute, but City still found a way to win when Erling Haaland scored in the 60th minute from a Josko Gvardiol cross. The goal was initially ruled offside before VAR overturned the decision.
The controversy deepened after the match when Pro Ref, the body responsible for Premier League refereeing, admitted that VAR had made an error in awarding the goal. It said VAR had failed to properly consider the involvement of City's Enzo Fernández, who was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball.
City held on despite United having the numerical advantage and moved to second in the Premier League with 12 points from four matches. United remain 13th with four points.
Elsewhere, Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0, Brighton thrashed Coventry City 5-0, Liverpool drew 0-0 with Fulham, Chelsea drew 2-2 with Hull City and Tottenham drew 0-0 with Everton.
