The FIFA international break runs from Monday to Tuesday, October 6. This break brings both pros and cons for the PSL top-flight clubs, especially following the intense start to the domestic season in early August.

Below, we look at both sides of the coin:

THE GOOD

Enough time to recover

Matches have come thick and fast since the start of the season. Teams competing across multiple competitions – like Orlando Pirates, who have featured in the Betway Premiership, MTN8, and CAF Champions League – have had little time to rest. This break will allow coaches to structure training sessions better and keep teams focused on upcoming fixtures.

Players can get a breather

While coaches often feel momentum carries a team, an excessive workload makes players vulnerable to injury and burnout. AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has scored seven goals in his opening seven league games, but he certainly needs a rest to sustain that form.

Preparation time for CAF competitions

The final qualifying round of the continental inter-club competitions kicks off right after the FIFA break. Because continental opponents require different tactical profiling than domestic rivals, the technical teams at Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Durban City will benefit from the extra time to prepare.

THE BAD

Momentum might be lost

While teams and players get a much-needed rest, they risk losing their rhythm. Kaizer Chiefs typically start seasons well, but defender Dillan Solomons has noted with concern how the team often endures a rough patch right after a FIFA break. Following an unbeaten start to the campaign, he will hope that trend does not repeat itself.

Possible national team setbacks

The turnaround between domestic and international duty is unusually tight. As a result, players who are regulars for both club and country face severe fatigue or heightened injury risks. Additionally, the intensity of international matches leaves players vulnerable to aggravating existing minor injuries.

The transfer window closes

The PSL transfer window slams shut on 21 September. If regulars suffer injuries while away on national duty, clubs that failed to bolster their squads in time could face serious setbacks. This timing guarantees a nerve-wracking period for several management teams.  |  IOL Sport
