Weekend sport round-up: Sundowns, Proteas Women, Premier League results and more

The weekend produced big results for South African sport, with Mamelodi Sundowns winning the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, the Proteas Women completing a 5-0 T20I series sweep and Orlando Pirates continuing their strong start to the domestic season.

Football

Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 Al Ahli Sundowns beat Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday to win the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup. Nuno Santos scored both goals as the African champions advanced to the next stage of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Orlando Pirates 2-0 Marumo Gallants Pirates made it five consecutive Betway Premiership wins to move within a point of leaders Sundowns.

Golden Arrows 0-0 Kaizer Chiefs Chiefs were held to a goalless draw after Lebohang Maboe missed a penalty.

AmaZulu 1-0 Polokwane City AmaZulu claimed another win to remain among the early pace-setters.

Premier League

Manchester City maintained their perfect start with a 5-3 win over Sunderland.

Arsenal suffered a 3-0 defeat at Brighton, while Liverpool beat Bournemouth 1-0.

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Fulham.

La Liga

Atlético Madrid 2-1 Real Madrid

Atlético won a fiery Madrid derby after Real's Dean Huijsen was sent off early in the second half.

After the defeat, Mourinho held up photographs of two challenges and said Atlético players should have been sent off. He accused the officials of making serious errors, while Atlético coach Diego Simeone called for respect.

Cricket

Zimbabwe Women 151/8 — South Africa Women 164/6 The Proteas Women completed a 5-0 T20I series sweep against Zimbabwe.

Nthabiseng Nini and Ayanda Hlubi took three wickets each as South Africa defended their total by 13 runs.

Athletics

South Africa's Tayla Kavanagh set a national record in the women's 5km at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen.

Kavanagh finished fourth in 14:51, one second outside the medals.

Rugby

Japan beat Fiji 20-15 in Tokyo to win the Pacific Nations Cup.

The Springbok Women lost 50-19 to Wales in the WXV Global Series in Cardiff.

Golf

J.J. Spaun won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth with a 17-under-par total, finishing two shots clear of the chasing group.

Motorsport

Pedro Acosta claimed his first MotoGP victory at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Tennis

Iva Jovic successfully defended her Guadalajara Open title, beating fellow American Peyton Stearns 6-4, 6-2.
