A father is turning one of the most painful chapters of his life into a book.
Khaya Dlamini’s upcoming “Echoes in the Lift Shaft: The Dlamini Twins Battle for Justice” documents the tragedy that changed his family forever and the fight for answers that followed.
On October 18, 2025, Dlamini’s twins, Aphelele and Aphile, fell through an open lift shaft at the HOMii residential building in Durban. Aphelele died while Aphile suffered severe injuries and spent a month in a coma.
Dlamini said writing the book has been difficult, but he wanted to document the full story.
“The reason that I decided to write the book is that I want the world to know what exactly happened by sharing all the details,” he said.
From grief to a record of what happened
Dlamini said the book will detail the events surrounding the incident as well as what he described as corruption, cover-ups and threats connected to the case.
He said his intention is also to give courage to others who may find themselves facing similar circumstances.
“No amount of power or connections and money can bury the truth,” he said.
The book will examine the family’s experience after the incident, including Aphile’s rehabilitation and the lasting impact of her injuries.
Dlamini said her recovery has given the family strength.
“She is strong, and she keeps the family going with the strength she shows. She motivates us,” he said.
A search for accountability
Dlamini has raised concerns about the handling of the investigation. He alleged that a statement went missing at SAPS and that delays followed, including what he described as difficulties getting officers to the scene.
He also alleged interference involving other departments connected to the investigation.
The book will examine what Dlamini believes amounts to a wider pattern of failures. He also referred to a 2023 incident involving the same lift at the building, in which a young woman died.
For Dlamini, that earlier incident is an important part of understanding the questions surrounding the lift and the subsequent investigation.
One chapter, Who Governs the Government?, will examine his allegations about the influence of individuals within government departments.
Remembering a son, celebrating a survivor
At the heart of the book is Aphelele’s memory and Aphile’s survival.
Dlamini said the book will honour his son while documenting his daughter’s journey.
“It would be honouring and remembering the life of Aphelele and also celebrating the survival of Aphile, her struggles and strengths, and also mapping our fight for justice,” he said.
The case sparked public attention through protests and social media campaigns under #JusticeForDlaminiTwins, with supporters calling for accountability.
Dlamini said the book is also about refusing to allow intimidation to silence the family.
He expects “Echoes in the Lift Shaft: The Dlamini Twins Battle for Justice" to be released in mid 2027, subject to the publishing process.
“If there are delays or changes, I will announce them through my social media channels,” he said.
